Tummy Tuck

What Is A Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) is a procedure designed to smooth and add firmness to your abdomen, giving you a slimmer and trimmer profile. The operation also can improve the appearance of stretch marks, especially those located below the navel. Tummy tuck surgery is not a treatment for weight control or a substitute for regular physical activity and a healthy, balanced diet. The results of a tummy tuck can be long lasting, provided you follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

What Does the Tummy Tuck Procedure Involve?

Tummy tuck surgery removes excess skin and fat. The aim is to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall and remove excess skin and fat resulting in a flatter abdominal profile. The most common way this is achieved is by making a long horizontal incision from hipbone to hipbone just above the pubic area. (If you have loose skin above the navel, a second incision is then made around the navel to remove excess skin). The skin is then separated from the abdominal wall and is lifted up to reveal the vertical muscles in your abdomen. The muscles are then pulled together and stitched into a new position so that they are tighter. The peeled back flap of skin and fat is then stretched downwards towards the initial incision and any extra tissue is removed. The incision is then sutured closed leaving a flatter and younger looking abdomen.

What Will Be Covered During the Initial Consultation?

At the initial consultation you will be asked your reasons for wishing to undergo a Tummy Tuck and what your expectations are from the treatment. Your skin tone and the degree of loose skin will be assessed, as well as the amount of excess fat in your abdomen and the condition of your abdominal muscles. If you plan to become pregnant or lose considerable weight in the future, you should mention this to Dr. Lambeth. You will be asked questions about your medical history, whether you are taking any medication or have any drug allergies. Dr. Lambeth will explain the options available to you in order to achieve the best results from your Tummy Tuck surgery.

Dr. Lambeth will discuss details of the procedure, what to expect during your hospital stay and during your recovery period. He will also discuss the potential risks and complications associated with your chosen procedure. As with any surgery, you will have many questions.
Dr. Lambeth will be glad to answer all of your questions during your consultation.
