Breast Reconstruction

What Is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring the size and shape of breasts after mastectomy or other disease. There are three primary methods used in breast reconstruction: 1. Insertion of tissue expanders/prostheses; 2. The Latissimus Dorsi Flap (with or without a breast implant); and 3. The TRAM or DIEP flap (microsurgical tummy flap) – the TRAM (Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous) flap.

What Factors Determine What Kind of Method is Right For Me?

There are several factors which will influence the type of reconstructive technique that
Dr. Lambeth would recommend. Those factors include: the type of mastectomy which has been performed, the size and shape of the unaffected breast, whether radiation therapy has been used in the affected breast, as well as your natural body shape and medical history.

Has Breast Reconstruction Changed Since Its Inception?

There has been a significant improvement in the safety and quality of breast reconstruction combined with more widespread availability of this procedure. Breast reconstruction surgery helps women cope with the psychological effects of a mastectomy to make them feel whole again. Both surgeons and oncologists acknowledge the psychological benefits of restoration of normal breast symmetry.
